The Rat Shed

After much discussion between other breeders and myself, I decided to move my rats in to shed which will double up as a small office.

I have ordered a 16' x 8' shed from Woodland Garden Buildings - they also trade on ebay under "malverngardenbuildings" and "woodlandsheds". There customer service is very poor so don't expect much from them.

This is the plan for th garden and hopefully what it would look like when it is finished.

4th August 2009

Mapped the ground out with string to get an idea of the size of the shed.

7th August 2009

Base has been made and is now bedded in the ground and secured to the concrete blocks. Now we await the delivery of the shed.

12th August 2009
Well as planned the shed was delivered on the 11th however the 8' sides didn't fit down the alley way (we live mid-terrace) so they are on the front garden. Fitters are coming back Friday to finish it.

22nd August 2009
As you can see the shed hasn't been fitted nearly 2 weeks after being ordered, the 8' foot panels have been transfered from the front to the back but that is all that has been done. I have phoned a large number of time to arrange for my shed to installed (since I have paid for it) but everytime I am told the same thing - the fitters are on their way to you now but oddly enough they never turn up As it also turns out the building isn't to the specifications that I ordered so I need 2 replacement panels and the two end floor pieces are damaged.

5th September 2009
Well the correct side panels were delivered this morning however as you can see the shed wasn't put together. The didn't have the correct equipment to fix the flooring or the struts to support the apex.
The fitter has promised to come back tomorrow afternoon with everything he needs to fix the shed. We have spoken to the manager at woodland he wasn't interested.

13th September 2009
Finally the shed was installed yesterday. It isn't what I would call perfect, however will a little bit of work it should be fine for the rats any my office.

Next stage is to insulate it!

20th September 2009
Eletrics are now installed and working. All the materials for doing the insulation are ready just need to find the time to do them!

Shed has now been insulated ready for painting tomorrow.

27th September 2009
We have painted the base coat on all the sides ready to paint my chosen colour. Had to go and buy more paint as it's taken alot more than we though it would.

Stage 1 for today was the lino. Bought it and fitted this morning. Ideally I would have like a plain colour but they weren't cheap so went for this one.

29th September 2009
With a little help from Ikea I have some storage units for hammocks and toys. I need to buy a few more trays

What the inside looks like at the end of this evening. Rats will be moving in tomorrow.

Because I have opening windows, I was concerned about unwanted outside vistors so Robert has meshed the windows over. At the bottom (where you can see the cable ties) is a small opening section so the windows can be closed.

30th September 2009
Finally after 3 hours 1 cage is in the shed.

..... 2 cages is in the shed.....

had to give up at this point as it was getting late. Have 1 more cage to go in plus a few small bits and pieces and we all done :)

1st October 2009
All 4 cages are now in the shed. The last cage took a while due to it's height and that it didn't hold together well in pieces.

1st October 2009
Desk now in. That was as far as we got today as we had plans for this evening hopefully tomorrow everything will be complete and then we can start sorting the house out!
